Wycombe marsh
In 2004 St James Homes appointed jnpgroup as their civil, structural and environmental consultants on a new housing development on the site of Thames Water's redundant High Wycombe Sewage Treatment Works adjacent to the River Wye in Buckinghamshire.
High Wycombe STW was decommissioned in 2004 following the diversion of flows to a new STW at Little Marlow. Effluent from High Wycombe's population of 85,000 now travels 4km in a gravity sewer inside a 2.75m diameter service tunnel that has been cut up to 90m deep under the Buckinghamshire hills at a cost of £56m.
Fully treated effluent was traditionally discharged into the River Wye, so to maintain the hydrological and ecological balance a compensation flow of 300 l/s of 'clean' water is now pumped back from Marlow into the River Wye.
Demolition and contamination is currently being carried out for Thames Water under direction from jnpgroup.
Construction of the main infrastructure and the first 50 residential units will commence in 2006.
This phased development will eventually comprise 350 new dwellings, a community building and a number of B1 industrial units.
