Container Prep Wash Facillity Extension
The project was to provide a new bunded, self contained wash area for laboratory glassware, to clean the glass and control the disposal of waste
The Site
The proposed facility was to be located close to the laboratories in a position where the glass could be delivered without leaving the controlled environment of the laboratory but close to drainage systems and services required within the extension. The location chosen was determined by the internal functions of lab whilst the size of the extension was determined by the equipment to be accommodated within it. These two factors affected the external layout requiring modifications to the drainage system and access road.

The Design
The Client required the facility to provide a self contained wash area outside of the working laboratory but within the building envelope.
The facility was to be built as a 2 storey extension to the existing building with the main wash area on the ground floor and water tanks and air handling units on the first floor with ladder access between the levels to avoid losing vital floor space.
The existing building structure adjacent to the extension was surveyed to establish the structural member sizes and enable them to be analysed for the additional loads from the proposed extension.
The extension utilised a steel frame structure, designed at centres to suit the existing structure. It was connected to the existing columns. The building was provided with a profiled composite steel sheet roof laid to falls back to the existing building gutter system, with a precast concrete plank first floor set into steelbeams to maximise headroom. The ground floor was cast as a ground bearing RC slab with bunded upstands to contain any tank bursts or spills within the facility.
The extension was provided with pad and trenchfill footings, sleeving existing services and drainage runs through the footings and strengthening and underpinning the existing building foundations as required to accommodate the additional load on the columns subject to the exposed footing and substrate.
The facility was provided with air locks and pass throughs to the laboratory areas, to receive dirty glass ware and to return clean glass back for the lab use.
