Distribution Warehouse Extension
The project was a design and build contract for an extension and refurbishment to an existing warehouse distribution depot including design of foundations, steelframing, wall and roof cladding, new suspended floors to suit dock levellers with buffers and wheel guides. The project also required diversions to existing drainage runs and alterations to the existing depot yard.
The Site
The existing single storey open but covered warehouse depot shared a yard with another facility on the site and vehicle movements in and out of the yard were restricted due to traffic flows and the position of the warehouse dock levellers. This created health and safety concerns as well restricting vehicle transfers.

The Design
The Client required the depot refurbishment and extension to ease vehicle movements and various schemes for new dock positions were reviewed by Auto Tracking HGV’s movements. Once the dock positions were agreed with regard to suiting vehicle movements, the internal distribution operations had to be reviewed and modified to suit the proposed layout.
The existing building structure was surveyed to establish the existing construction details to undertake structural analysis of the existing members with the new extension construction. This included surveying the existing loading dock substructure as well the roof framing and steel frame structure.

The extension was to be constructed using structural steel with beams spanning large openings to suit the existing loading bay and new dock positions, to provide an open distribution area. The existing roof above the loading bay was to be removed and replaced with a new roof and new support members fixed to the existing framing. The original roof cladding load capacity was found wanting, and a more controlled environment within the loading bay area would be achieved with new structure. Some of the existing roof members also had to be modified to suit the docking door systems heights.
During the foundation excavations, an existing soakaway was uncovered below the warehouse suspended floor . This required modifications to the new foundations and new superstructure design. jnpgroup consulting engineers provided a quick and proactive service to ensure that the works were not delayed by the structural team

The dock levellers and doors were designed by a specialist in conjunction with jnpgroup consulting engineers, to ensure that door heights, vehicle forces and loads were correctly designed. The existing loading bay was to be retained but jnpgroup consulting engineers were asked to assess it for additional loading from new finishes, new conveyor equipment and to strengthen the structure as necessary.
The external yard levels were reviewed to suit new drainage runs and to assist with vehicle movements.
