Hoddeson Car Park
The project was to provide increased car parking spaces by introducing a new raised car park deck approx. 30m x 100m with ramped car access for an existing, but now extended, Superstore.
The Site
The allocated site was part of the existing car park adjacent to the store and was located on a sloping gradient. The client insisted that the site was to be developed in stages and sections to minimise disruption to the store and maximise car parking spaces at all times. Therefore the site was continuously moving as each section was completed
The Design
The project was a design and build project lead by Contractor Clancy Docwra. jnpgroup formed part of the design team and were originally appointed to carry out the foundation works and co-ordinate the structural designs. The steelwork subcontractor was responsible for the steel frame and deck design. Further subcontractors were appointed to design and detail the cladding materials to the side of the car park at upper level
Clancy were responsible for developing the planning layout into a working scheme to ensure that the maximum number of car parking spaces were achieved
jnpgroup consulting engineers were provided with the foundation loads from the steelwork contractor and designed the footings to suit the vertical and horizontal loads accordingly, ensuring the footings did not encroach on an easement adjacent to the scheme. As the project developed, jnpgroup consulting engineers were appointed to design and detail access stairs at various locations due to escape route requirements and a new access stair and lliftshaft area adjacent to the store.

The deck was specified as a concrete slab with holorib decking with 3 main expansion joints based on ambient temperature changes. This mirrored the detailed expansion joint locations in the steel frame.
The steel frame was checked for fire protection requirements and costly intumescent painting was avoided by Fire Engineering designs justifying the steel beam flange and web sizes with only the occasional column having to be block filled to satisfy fire requirements.
jnpgroup consulting engineers analysed the layout exploring various parking arrangements and traffic routes to increase the number of car parking spaces. We were also involved in resolving issues raised by the Council regarding the crash barrier adjacent to the parapet ,which they deemed climbable.
