Halifax High School, an existing school constructed in masonry.
The school has been converted into 50 luxury one, two and three bedroom apartments. By utilising the existing large floor to ceiling heights, part mezzanine floors were introduced to create additional floor space, without restricting natural light. The top floor school gym was divided into loft style apartments with exposed timber trusses and part mezzanine floors.
JNPGroup were employed to provide the Structural Engineering and Architectural services on the project.
Structural work involved, strengthening of the existing structure, including filler joist and timber floors, steelwork framing, timber roof trusses, walls and foundations.
Timber trusses in the top floor gym were strengthened to take the additional load from the mezzanine floors and repaired due to previous modifications carried out by the school.
A new passenger lift was and restrictions on space required the underpinning of the existing walls by piling.
Architectural services for the project included the preparation and submission of a Building Regulations application to the Local Authority and JNPGroup also assisted and advised the Developer/Contractor throughout the works on issues relating to obtaining approval.
The conversion won the LABC award for 'Major restoration and conversion' for the Yorkshire area and have been put forward for the National LABC Awards in London in October 2010
