Position Summary

Trainee technicians will learn how to prepare civil and structural engineering drawings and details using AutoCAD through a combination of on the job and formal training. Project teams are assembled and re-allocated as the workload of the practice and project type/size requires. Trainee Technicians are therefore required to be flexible in terms of moving from team to team, and hence supervisor to supervisor.

Main Duties

Following a comprehensive training programme you will:

  • Learn how to prepare civil and structural engineering drawings using AutoCAD
  • Learn how to exercise due care and diligence
  • Attend site to inspect various stages of construction works
  • Print drawings for in-house checking and external issue
  • Occasionally attend site with more senior staff to inspect various stages of construction works
  • Learn the principles of Highways and Drainage
  • Learn how to carry out simple topographic surveys
  • Assist with general office duties when other staff require help

Requirements

Education/Learning Experience

  • 5 GCSE’s grade A-C, including Maths and English
  • Have a basic understanding of Microsoft Office products

Technical Skills

  • To demonstrate basic ability to learn the technical aspects of the job by passing an initial aptitude test
  • Ideally have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Competencies

  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage own workload within agreed time scales
  • Present a professional image to all visitors, external professional, clients and staff

Training & Opportunities for Career Advancement

You will be expected to work toward a BTEC ONC/HNC in Civil or Structural Engineering on a day release basis

You will also be encouraged to obtain professional qualifications (such as ICE Eng Tech)

You will be expected to attend in-house and external training courses, seminars, institution events, and generally comply with the ‘Continuing Professional Development’ requirements of the:

  • JNP Group's QA System - 'Training Procedures and Guidance Notes'
  • The training requirements of the professional body to which you are (or become) affiliated

You will be encouraged to advance within the project team, partner section and practice hierarchy within JNP Group. Advancement will depend on your ability to demonstrate your capabilities and commitment to a career in Consulting Engineering.
