JNP Group initially carried out a structural inspection of the station building prior to a full interior and exterior refurbishment being carried out. The ornate chimneys on the building were in poor condition and as part of the refurbishment were partially rebuilt and reinforced.

The station building is a listed structure and JNP Group liaised closely with the local authority, providing additional heritage details where required to ensure discharge of all conditions.

JNP Group also provided the temporary works design for the scheme. The station always had to remain accessible, and along with the non-standard roof and chimney design, the resulting scaffolding design was a complex arrangement of ladder beams, walkways and stairs.
