Liverpool Central Station

An extension and refurbishment of the concourse area and installation of new link bridge to new staff accommodation.

A major upgrade to the concourse area, ticket gates, waiting areas, and public conveniences, plus the construction of a new staff building and glazed link bridge.

The existing passenger access to the lifts to the Northern line was via a narrow external path and the concourse was lacking in natural lighting. See left and centre pics above.

Existing external masonry wall panels were removed, and a new steel structure at both floor and roof levels introduced to bridge the Northern Line. The new open-plan layout and lightweight ETFE roof provided more natural lighting to form clear sight lines for improved circulation and passenger orientation.

New modular staff accommodation was installed to the East of the station concourse, accessed by a fully glazed link bridge. Foundations to the building had to be very carefully positioned as the Underground Northern line was directly beneath the site. Matters were further complicated by the discovery of old disused buried platforms .
