Gresham Road Depot

Overview

Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council tasked JNP Group with undertaking a visual inspection and structural condition survey of the existing modular waste storage bays, in order to determine their structural adequacy during the day-to-day operations that took place at the Council waste depot.

During the inspections, JNP Engineers took into consideration the stability of the side, intermediate and end walls of the waste bays that were constructed using 1800 mm long x 600 mm wide x 600 mm high BW600 concrete builder block units. These blocks were stacked/overlap bonded to form the bays of the required size and height.

Project Solutions

When inspecting the modular waste storage bays, JNP Engineers needed to gain a full understanding of how the walls were constructed, taking into account the limitations when in use at the waste depot. Factors that were taken into consideration included wall stability when used for the storage of household waste, the effects of accidental vehicle impact and safe pedestrian access to the inside as well as around the periphery of the storage area during the facility’s operational hours.

As a result of the assessment, our Engineers provided recommendations in relation to the overall stability of the structure, additions to facilitate the operations of the loader machinery, the introduction of additional safety barriers and signage to enable pedestrians to safely move around the site. In addition to this, alternative safer working practices were recommended in and around the storage area, with specific focus on suitable ways to keep pedestrians segregated from vehicles and machinery.

Project Summary

JNP Group’s Engineers used their extensive experience and knowledge to provide Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council with a structural condition survey of their waste storage facility that identified the stability of the existing structure and provided recommendations for improvements to the structure’s stability, together with measures to improve on their safe working practices.
