Anthony joined JNP Group as a graduate in 2019, progressing his way to senior civil engineer. He specialises in early-stage work, supporting due diligence and site master planning as well as promotion, outline and reserved matters applications.

Why did you choose Civil Engineering as a career path?

I first learnt about engineering at a school careers fayre. I found geography lessons really engaging, learning about how the ways in which urbanisation has affected people in different countries across the world.  I also enjoyed maths and wanted to put all I had learnt to practical use that would have a real-world impact; this led me to civil engineering.

What inspires you about Engineering?

Engineering gives us the chance to make the world a better place through carefully considered designs and innovations. Especially having the ability to promote sustainable developments that will improve people’s lives as well as give them somewhere to live, all while improving the local environment, makes what we do really rewarding.

What are current projects are you working on?

My projects include big outline planning applications for residential schemes. It’s really positive to see lots of new development coming forward after a long period of decline. These schemes are fun and interesting to work on, as we are able to implement sustainable solutions, incorporating green SuDS to overcome various challenges and constraints. Hopefully these outline applications will be successful, leading to a significant increase in sustainable residential developments being built in the next few years!

What is your favourite structure and why?

As a civil engineer, I can’t pick a classic structure; it would have to be one from my area of expertise: the Bazalgette sewer system in London. Victorian engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette designed a brick-built sewer system in the late 19th century that is still in operation now. The hand-dug feat of engineering cleaned up the streets of London and went a long way to giving people a better, healthier quality of life. This is a great example of the lasting impact civil engineers can have on future generations.
