When did you first become aware of the possibility of a career in engineering?
After university I was struggling to find a job in the field of my degree, but I managed to get a role as a technician for a local authority highway department. Almost instantly I loved the challenge and the diversity of the work and never looked back! I quickly developed skills in designing 3D roads and drainage systems and enjoyed doing it, so from then I think I knew it was the career for me.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
I think the most challenging part is that no two sites that we work on are the same; every project has different hurdles to overcome. You need to keep learning on the job and developing your knowledge base in order to come up with the correct solution on each site.
What has been your favourite project?
I recently worked on a scheme for Rotherham Borough Council where we were developing an old car park into public realm gardens, located on the banks of the River Don. It was the first time I have been involved with a project of this nature; it had some interesting obstacles to overcome. The works are ongoing now, and as it’s only a few minutes down the road from our office in Sheffield, it will be great to see it once it’s completed.
What is your favourite structure and why?
I would have to say Wolf Rock Lighthouse off the coast of Cornwall. It sits on a small outcrop of rocks, 9 miles off Lands End. The 41m granite tower was built over 150 years ago and gets battered by some huge storms, and it’s still going strong! The lighthouse is a great example of how traditional engineering stands the test of time.
