Marta is an Associate structural engineer who has been project manager for various structural and civil engineer design schemes including new builds, renovations, cladding, foundations and steel frame structures.
When did you first become aware of the possibility of a career in engineering?
When I realised that I would not make a good princess! On a serious note, it was at high school. I was good at maths and science, so technical perfection was the one to go for. I liked the idea of the architecture; however, I didn’t think I was creative enough, and I found out about engineering as an alternative.
Why did you choose Structural Engineering as a career path?
I graduated in Poland, where at the time the market was difficult. Being practical, I thought that people will always need houses, infrastructure and roads, so engineering work will always be available to some extent (new builds, repairs, or refurbishment). Additionally, the idea of leaving something behind was very exciting, something bigger than me, which my children and grandchildren will be able to see. I also wanted to travel and see the world, which I thought an engineering career may help with … I was not wrong!
What inspires you about Engineering?
I like solving problems and helping people. It’s very satisfying to hear from a pleased client and/or co-worker who appreciated your efforts. I also like that no two jobs are ever the same, and each day brings plenty of surprises (some of which can be challenging!). Working on projects that improve the environment or quality, and safety of people’s lives always feels good.
What has been your favourite project?
The hydropower stations – low head hydro power plants that generate electricity from a small water drop. I have been a part of the design team, which delivered three projects of this nature throughout Yorkshire. It has been an intensive but extremely interesting few years of my career. The team that I worked with was amazing and I have learned a lot.
What is your favourite structure and why?
Hard to say… there are so many that caught my eye over the years! I like Antoni Gaudí’s buildings such as Casa Milà and Sagrada Familia with their quirkiness and attention to details. I was also impressed with Dubai’s skyline and Burj Khalifa, as I appreciate how much engineering is going into a project of that nature.
